Joseph Smith claimed to have translated the Egyptian papyrus into english by the inspiration of God. But many sources conclude after having translated and seeing the facsimiles, egyptologists have deemed Joseph Smith's ';The Book of Abraham'; nothing more than a made up story from the mind of Joseph Smith. So what is the rebuttal on the LDS side and why is it so hard to think that maybe, just maybe, he was totally lying? So I ask... Is the Book of Abraham written by Joseph Smith false? And if not why?Is the Book of Abraham false?
Outside of Mormons, no professional Egyptologist has ever looked at the scrolls and seen anything but typical, well known Egyptian funeral text.
Isn't it quite a coincidence that NONE of the Abraham stuff survived and so much of the totally irrelevant stuff made it?
When combined with the obviously wrong Book of Mormon, the Kinderhook plates, his failed attempt at rewriting the Bible, one easily sees that Smith loved a good scam.Is the Book of Abraham false?
Well for one thing we only have a small percentage of what's left of the scrolls. What is left were pieces of the scrolls that were cut up and pasted on a board.
It is known that the scrolls were huge and took up a great space of room, if I am correct it stretched from one room to another. The scrolls were not written by Abraham per say, but they are considered the teachings of Abraham that were passed on and more than likely transcribed by Egyptian writers who possibly were Christian, as the scrolls are dated from a period after Christ's death.
We only have what's left of a huge collection of scrolls found with the mummies a small percentage. To judge that the Book of Abraham is a false, by a small percentage of material is an injustice.
Joseph never finished translating all the papyri. Today, we only have a small fraction of the papyri Joseph originally had. So how do we know that the papyri Egyptologists have examined is the same that Joseph translated from? Well for one, eye witness descriptions of the scroll from which Joseph translated the Book of Abraham do not match the description of the funeral scrolls the Egyptologists examined.
The funeral scrolls WERE part of the collection that Joseph originally owned, but only a small part. The Book of Abraham when unrolled, went the length of two rooms. Non-LDS eye-witness testimony describes illustrations not present in the recovered scrolls. Joseph Smith himself described the scroll as well preserved and in red and black writing. This doesn't describe the funeral scrolls at all. They are in terrible condition, and written in black writing.
Finally, the Book of Abraham translated by Joseph Smith has significant parallels with the Apocalypse of Abraham and the Testament of Abraham. Neither of those books was available at the time Joseph translated the Book of Abraham.
I don't believe the Book of Abraham is made up. It is an inspired, deep, and thought provoking text.
EDIT: ';rational thinker'; can talk about ';coincidence'; all he wants, but the fact remains that the contemporary descriptions of the scrolls from which Joseph translated the Book of Abraham do not match the descriptions of the funerary scrolls the Egyptologists examined.
Anything to do with 'joseph smith' is False!! (Mormonism is a Cult that teaches a false gospel and a false christ, Period!!)
It's all a matter of interpretation. How do you think we got 1500 different religions from one God? But they all agree on one thing, the collection basket.
It is all baloney
That is right path,
