If these holy books are considered the true word of God, can't you render the whole book false if you disapprove even one fact? Its a matter of simple logic. If you can disapprove even one statement in a holy book (Bible, Quran etc) can you render the whole book false?
The real question is whether the religious text -- Bible, Quran, is to be interpreted literally of figuratively.
This is why religious study is so interesting - study refering to the evolution of the text, and the historical context in which the text evolved.
IMHO... with reference to the Quran, when you look at the various tribal cultures surrounding Mohammed at the time the Quran emerged and developed, the new religious and world view Mohammed brought forth was pretty radical. (In the same way Jesus' teachings were radical within his growing circle of influence.)If you can disapprove even one statement in a holy book (Bible, Quran etc) can you render the whole book false?
Nope, mainly because God himself did not write by himself, the book. And he did not translate it into today's languages.
The logic is ill-conceived because man has had his hand in virtually every sacred work and until the invention and use of the printing press, copying errors were commonplace.
No. This is a logical fallacy. There are probably no books that have ever been written that contain 100% true statements, but this doesn't make them all completely false. It just means you have to learn to take in information with well-developed critical thinking skills.
The problems with the bible are that it contains many claims that can be, and have been, utterly disproved (or proved to not be possible). Also, there are many contradictions in the bible.
The problem is, we do not have the originals, only manuscript copies. I have read statements that go - the Bible is 99.9 % accurate. So saying that one statement in the Bible does not appear to make sense will get the response - perhaps that is the 0.1% that we are not too sure of( in addition to another response: ';There is something we have missed while trying to understand';). You can convince a knowledgeable Christian about a problem statement in the Bible but his faith will still be intact. As far as Islam is concerned, I get the impression that Muslims regard the Quran as if it descended perfect from heaven. It will therefore be impossible for them to admit that there are any errors. To admit to an error is to admit that Islam is not true. I feel Christianity and Islam see their respective holy books in slightly different ways. So your question ';If you can disprove even one statement..'; will not cause the Christian to lose any sleep. A Muslim response would be interesting.
Yep. Either it's the infallible word of god or it's not. That's why christians trying to use the bible as proof of anything is ridiculous considering there are hundreds of inconsistencies and falsehoods in the bible.
That's why they have tons of versions of the bible.
So people can find the version they can handle. If you have certain likes and dislikes you can look up a list of versions, with reviews, and select the one that is most palatable.
More versions are coming out all the time...
Wow here we go again, the mud slinging never stops with you Atheists does it?Put this in proper perspective then,if that's true your evolution theory is in serious trouble because the supposed evolving theory is now nonexistent.
Yup.
Especially if they claim that their deity is perfect. ONE single mistake in their manifesto PROVES that their god does not exist.
There is NO way that a perfect and omnipotent being would allow such a lapse.
Conversely, if one statement is true, it doesn't make every statement true.
They quite frankly add up, so yes. Outside of a few simple statements, yes.
They claim that no one has ever proven anything is wrong. But it's only because apologists are very creative in coming up with ways to talk around the contradictions.
Sometimes we disagree with something only to find out later that we were missing some key piece of information.
Yes.
Since Bible has been amended by men, it is absolutely false.
It doesn't matter, the fundies won't listen.
no, but it does prove that it is not inerrant, which means that the whole thing should be questioned
yes. i need 100% proof. that's why i do not believe science.
I don't think so. It would be like if I claimed to be healthy, but one day you heard me cough.
