Like when the book comes out in August called ';Case against Obama';If somebody writes a book about you and it has false facts, can you sue the author?
Have you read the book? How do you know the facts are false? Are you part of the cult?If somebody writes a book about you and it has false facts, can you sue the author?
Yes, it would be libel to knowingly publish falsehoods as facts. What is more important, if such a book comes out and Obama says it is false but does not sue, you can believe it is true. You see, if someone writes about you and you call them a liar, they can take you to court and prove what they said is true and sue for damages.
A clear example of this is Bill Clinton's response to Juanita Brodrick claim that he raped her. He never said he did not rape her. He was very careful not to make that mistake. In fact his lawyer came out and made a very odd statement to the press. When asked if it was true, the lawyer said, we affirm that back in 1971 the President did not engage in any sexual activity with Miss Brodrick. Then he refused to take any questions and walked back inside.
Interesting choice of words. For you see, back in 1971 the President was Jimmy Carter. So, Clinton's lawyer was saying the he was confirming that Jimmy Carter did not rape Juanita Brodrick. Not one time did Clinton say her claim was not true or that she was lying. He made darned sure he did not.
Now you know what to look for in an Obama response to such a book. He may say it is unfortunate that anyone would write such a book etc. But watch carefully. If the facts stated in the book are false he will say they are false and sue the author or challenge the author to sue him. But if he makes sure he does not say that, then you know the book is true.

If the facts are provably false, and there is damage, it is possible that they could be sued for libel. But, I don't think that the author can be ';convicted'; of libel if he reasonably believed his facts to be true, and/or, he didn't act negligently.
EDIT - And, if the statements made can be defined as opinions, libel will not succeed.
yes you can be sued especially if the character is as famous as Obama or even the president, and if convicted you'll pay lots of money plus go to jail for falsifying. it is understandable you hate him but its a crime if found out your opinion (personal facts) were actually made up to damage his image, so if you want to go to jail go ahead but if your facts are real then go ahead be ready to be on tv defending your personal opinions and prepared to prove them true too.
Public officials are held to a different standard when it comes to libel. They've put themselves in a position to have things said about them. They've sought publicity and must accept the rights of people to express their opinions for and against them. It is much harder for them to prove anything than it would be for you or I, who are not public officials. If someone wrote a book about either one of us that contained major falsehoods, we wouldn't have any problem suing and collecting major damages against the defendant.
If you are a well know individual, NO, which is unfortunate, in this country you can lie about a public figure and get away with it.
I think the key question is whether the author has malicious intent. He can be wrong without being malicious. I'm no lawyer either so check it out.
yes, you can sue the author for defamation of character
nice try, trust me publishers have lawyers to make sure this thing won't happen when the book is published because the facts have already been checked and they are TRUE!
Yes they can. They can sue for slander, libel, and defermation of character.
Yes it would be considered libel, and you really ought to reconsider voting for Obama.
This book sounds like a smear campaign. Yes, Obama can sue if there are false statements in the book. And I'm sure he will.
yeah i think you can freakin sure them!!! get some $$$$$$
Yes, the author can be sued.
I am not sure but I think they have different rules for Public and Private citizens.
not sure michael moore and al gore made a couple of movies that were mostly lies and i dont think they were sued
LOL, leave it up to a far left liberal to think facts are lies. That's why McCain is our next president.
Dont you libs know anything about spin?
yes, you would have legal grounds to do so
